False accusations of Misogyny against Bobby Fischer

Here is that great segment where Bobby Fischer appears on 1972 Dick Cavett show, and commends women chess players and shows his support for women in chess, proving once again, the media have spread astounding falsehoods against an innocent man. A second copy of this article, is located here.

Bobby Fischer, 1972, Falsely Accused of Misogyny

Some historical context for the young and up coming generation. When historical sources use the word, “chauvinism,” it does NOT necessarily mean, "anti-female" by default. It can also mean, “aggressive patriotism” as the USSR was very anti-U.S. and the U.S. was staunchly anti-Bolshevik. It can pertain to a religious extremist, discriminating against all other religions. If this context appears in old articles (today) it would automatically be mistaken as if pertaining to gender — and undue false rumors circulated.

Although U.S. Disclaims Bias, Few Blacks Sent to Iceland
Washington (UPI) Although it has been eight months since Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird denounced secret agreements with Iceland that limited the number of black servicemen assigned to the island, there has been no increase in the minuscule number of Negroes sent there.
Last November, when the secret agreement surfaced, defense officials said there were “about 40” blacks among the 3,000 sailors and airmen in Iceland. Now defense officials say there are only 42 blacks there — or barely 1 per cent of the U.S. forces on the island.
THE SECRET agreement with Iceland, dating back at least to the 1950s, was disclosed in documents released by the Congressional Black Caucus Nov. 16. The following day at the Pentagon, Laird issued a formal statement saying such orders were rescinded.
His statement said, “I am directing all Department of Defense components that any practices which result in denying equal opportunity in assignment are in violation of our policy and shall be ended forthwith.”
In a press conference that day, Laird let drop one reason why he thought the number of blacks on Iceland, might not increase. He said, “I don't believe there have been many requests for assignments to Iceland by black personnel.” He added that when it came to assignments, “we're going to give requests the first priority” … “We're not going to assign on a quota basis because that's just the reverse sort of policy.”
BLACKS are obviously not welcomed on the island, so there is no reason to believe they would be lining up to volunteer for assignment there. However, with its climatic reputation as an iceberg, whites aren't exactly volunteering in droves either, one official said.
Therefore, normal rotational assignments should result in a force on Iceland that is about 8 per cent black because 8 per cent of the Navy and Air Force are black.
The documents revealed by the Black Caucus, composed of all 13 Negro House members, showed that until 1961 the government of Iceland had objected to any Negroes being assigned there. But during 1961 it agreed to accept a token number.

A lady who actually participated in one of Bobby Fischer's exhibitions, describes that the Gender-Hostile atmosphere was NOT coming from Bobby Fischer, but others in the room, including male chess players with higher ratings than herself.

Memories of Bobby Fischer: Former 'Old Man's Game' Fascinates Reno Woman
She describes herself as a basically competitive person.
And she has vivid memories of playing chess with Bobby Fischer.

She had the opportunity to play Bobby Fischer in 1965 in Colorado Springs, Colo. At that time he gave chess demonstrations, then would play 40 members of the audience at one time. Chess boards were set up around the room.
Mrs. Thompson was the only woman in the circle. She remembers all the comments and strange looks she received from the spectators. She had only been playing chess for about six months and said most of the men present were high rated chess players.
“I was the most amateur player in the room, but I held my own,” she said.
She took great delight in watching the men resign as they met defeat at Fischer's hands.
“I outlasted two thirds of the men. As each one of them resigned, I cleared my throat because they had all laughed when I sat down to play.”

Fischer defeated all in the room that day except for one game which ended in a draw.
Mrs. Thompson said Fischer was not a personable sort and she doesn't remember him smiling the entire time he gave the demonstration. But chess players are seldom known to smile.
“He was so very serious and involved in the game. It was fascinating to watch the man, his mind was so fast.”

Ruth Cardoso addresses discrimination by men against women in chess. Then proceeds to shower Bobby Fischer with praise. Where is her criticism of his acts of personal discrimination against her? Merely praise. Inspiration for female chess players.

The Vancouver Sun Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Thursday, September 02, 1971

“And it is rude that many men feel women can't think abstractly enough for chess.”
“There are players too who will try every trick in the book to win. I recently played a man from the Philippines who was an insatiable talker. He'd arranged 11 draws simply because his opponent would accede just to get rid of him. I refused, so he said he'd beat me blindfolded. I won.”
Ruth has great admiration for U.S. grandmaster Bobby Fischer. His brilliant successes, she feels, have advanced immeasurably the cause of the game.
“He really fights. He wants to win and he doesn't make easy draws. It has never happened before that someone won 6-0, and twice. That's fantastic.
“Chess is like anything else in life. It's a fight.”

Examples of misogynists in Chess are plentiful, but Robert “Bobby” Fischer broke that mold:

Bobby Fischer Studies Women's Play

The Boston Globe Boston, Massachusetts Sunday, November 19, 1961 - Page 15 ()

Alas for Lisa Lane's long year of devotion to study in quest of the world's chess championship (women's division): she seems doomed to failure. One Mme. Nonna Goprindas Vili leads the field in general, and Lisa in particular. Seventeen women, mostly from Russia and Middle Europe, are competing at Vrjacka Banju, Yugoslavia, for a chance to play a match with the world champion. Lisa Lane, at present, is well down in the second division along with her compatriot.
According to “Chess,” not only the spectators but the top grandmasters were impressed by the superiority of Tal and Fischer at Bled. Gligoric has been quoted as saying, “Bobby is going to be world champion.” Dragoslav Andric says, “Keres, permanent pretender to the chess throne, famous for his coolness, played against Fischer as nervously as a girl.” Tal once called Fischer a “a living chess library.” Tal again (this time in astonishment): “He, even studies games by women players!”
All was not beer and skittles for Bobby in Yugoslavia, after all, he failed to win first prize though he defeated his chief rival and was undefeated, and then, after arriving in Sarajevo for a simul he lost his appendix.
More Bledisms: Dr. Milan Vidmar, Yugoslav chess great whose career started shortly after the century, directed at Bled and severely criticized Najdorf and Trifunovic for agreeing to a draw after only 11 moves. Vidmar was roundly applauded for his vigorous stand. Later people recalled Dr. V had not been averse to Grandmaster draws in his early days. To that Vidmar said calmly: “All saints were sinners in their youth.” . . .
Najdorf asked Tal to cite the best games he had played. Tal said there were four and named his opponents as Olafsson, Donner and Parma. Innocently Najdorf said, “But that's only three.” “The fourth,” said Tal, “will be my last round game against you.”
Now you, too, can be liked Bobby Fischer and study a game by two ladies. Lisa Lane lost on time to Gisela Gresser at Vrnjacka Banjanju

Bobby Fischer on his Mother and Chess

Transatlantic Gobbledegook
From the English magazine “Chess” comes this item:

“According to a fantastic report from Leipzig, Bobby Fischer claims that his mother was responsible, almost single-handed, for the U.S. team's participation there; that she organized banner demonstrations in front of the White House and finally went on a hunger-strike to make the authorities fork out the necessary $6,000 and permission!”

There is no doubt that Mrs. Fischer played a major role in getting the team project rolling again after it had been stalled. But it is a known fact that expenses were underwritten by various non-political bodies, with the U.S. Government finally agreeing to issue visas.

Ginzburg's Erroneous Reports vs Contemporary Reports

The excerpt from Gazette Montreal further demonstrates Bobby Fischer's track record of acknowledging women's contributions and right to participate in the sport.

However, his weapons are impressive—eight U.S. championships, starting at age 14—the youngest-ranking international grandmaster at 15—and a longtime, fearsome reputation as one of the most brilliant, aggressive players the game has ever seen. He gives credit to his mother's early encouragement and support.”

IF Polgar or any of the others that feign knee-jerk reaction to intolerance cared about actual misogyny, antisemitism, and other forms of discrimination — then why did Polgar mouth off toward me (both myself and Bobby Fischer on Autism Spectrum) advising people not to listen to people with disabilities to speak for themselves! She is an intolerant bigot, who pretends she has a right to speak for the Autism community! And then, accuses Bobby as misogynist for his beliefs that were fixed in the Old Testament/Judeo-Christian Bible (1964) because she is antisemitic! with no tolerance for Judaism … and why their desperate Gumby arguments … to twist Bobby's religious beliefs into “misogyny”? ! why aren't they discussing REAL misogynists in chess, like Dick Verber, Clif Sherwood, Jack S. Battell, Garry Kasparov, Mikhail Botvinnik guilty of saying such things as well, but not only them… add Lisa Lane to the list of making self-deprecating comments on the female gender… along with persons like Susan Polgar who are very unfriendly toward women on the Autism Spectrum, who are educating the public people about Autism, Cults and Bobby Fischer. Nope, they'll cover up their wrong-doings… while singling out and demonizing innocent chess players who were progressive on women for 1960's and 1970's and 1980's and 1990's like Bobby Fischer!

It helps one to better understand what an actual misogynist is, a bigotry exists, as in a “Deep Rooted Hatred” equivalent to other forms of bigotry such as religious bigotry or racism, i.e., my ex-husband who sent an explosive through the mail to me (https://vindication-of-bobby-fischer.co/), when I left him and mentioned divorce. To the misogynist, Women are not quite human, dehumanized and reduced in status to “personal property” in the Misogynist' judgment and demonized as evil… arbiter over life and death! No, Miss Polgar couldn't do any better than confusing mainstream 1964 religious indoctrinated Bobby Fischer with “Misogyny” — because shes' never actually dealt with hardcore Misogynists — Fischer, whom, like myself and millions of other women abroad including Rabbis, Preachers, and pew-sitters worldwide and especially housewives, believed in God ordained gender roles… but Polgar isn't Jewish (she does not keep the sabbath, does not obey the laws on pork, shellfish, catfish, lobster, etc, does not worship in synagogue), neither is she part of the Judaeo-Christian religions, so of course she has no insightful understanding of Bobby Fischer's 1964 view! and just throwing her antisemitic bandwagon insults at the wall, and see if something sticks for brownie points with the powers that be.

Police said the wound was apparently self-inflicted. An emergency operation in an effort to save his life was performed at a hospital where he was taken by Burbank police. Hospital attaches said he was dying. Miss Andrieux, 28, was killed yesterday in a Hollywood bungalow. The regular occupant of the bungalow, Mrs. Lucie Belville, a dressmaker, said that Sherwood, a chess expert, had threatened to kill the woman if she did not marry him.

Game Not for Women
“Women,” he says, “are just not cut out to be good chess players. There is something about the way they think that prevents them from becoming really adept to it.”
This is an opinion which Dick had a chance to confirm recently when he was matched against Lisa Lane, reigning United States Women's champion, during a tournament in Milwaukee. Dick defeated her handily.
Miss Lane, who is not used to being treated in so cavalier a fashion by unknowns in the game, nearly quit the tournament in a huff as a consequence.
There were those who were surprised a youngster from Chicago could score a decisive victory over a national champion but Dick wasn't one of them.
“It was like I said right from the start,” says Dick with a broad grin, “women just aren't cut out to be good chess players.”

Lisa Lane herself, was quoted as saying:

Fort Lauderdale News, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Sunday, March 20, 1960 - Page 120 ()

“Insiders say that while Bobby Fischer is an outright prodigy and a slightly eccentric one at that, Lisa Lane is a normal 22-year-old who simply has developed through hard work. She's demure and a little shy, but in recalling past matches, she'll dramatize every move in a burst of theatrics that leaves a listener breathless.
Is she good enough to beat Fischer? ‘No, I don't think so,” she says. “I've never played him, but I'm sure he's better than I. But then men are better than women at most things, aren't they? That's the way it should be.’”

Unscholarly fake news sources are plentiful on the web, such as this dubious claim which cites an even more dubious source. It turns out, “Bat Girl” finally (over a year after the issue was raised), produced its sketchy reference… Incidentally, the 1960 Newsweek does NOT claim to be a personal, face-to-face, formal interview with Fischer to be in the position to “quote Fischer”. So from where did Newsweek's reporter, source this citation?

That is “Bat Girl's” burden of evidence. “Bat Girl” fails to provide the original source of the quote —Perhaps from Frank Brady who confirmed Bobby Fischer was not a misogynist in his furious criticism of Ralph Ginzburg's vicious journalistic mugging, or perhaps Mikhail Tal, who confirmed Bobby's respect for women was high enough to even study their game strategy… perhaps it was Regina Fischer… no? Newsweek FAILS to provide the source for the quote they attribute to Bobby Fischer! This would be necessary, since, “Bat Girl's” reference was not to a personal, formal interview, between Newsweek & Fischer. I have tagged Quote Investigator on Twitter, to learn if they can find any earlier references to this dubious quote given by “Bat Girl's” dubious Newsweek source. If no earlier references can be provided other than a quote “pulled from thin air” by Newsweek in 1960 when Bobby Fischer was 17, chances are its just another flagrant example of #FakeNews.

Further elaborating on the trickery of “Bat Girl” the Newsweek publication (which contradicts contemporary accounts from 1959-1961 unless “Bat Girl” wants to call Tal and other Soviet Chess Players as well as Frank Brady along with many others, “Liars”?

“Bat Girl”'s 1960 Newsweek article was NOT PUBLISHED IN 1966-1967 as “Bat Girl” misleadingly implies to readers as it splices the dubious quote in with terms like “then US champion” and “contemporary” but rather, almost A DECADE EARLIER IN 1960, when Fischer would have been a teenager, around 17-18 years of age, or even younger. #FakeNews happens all the time, especially to controversial celebrities… then peddlers like this one come along to further mislead readers:

Cc'd: Quote Investigator

Bobby Fischer's Remarks Taken Out of Context

…and “Bat Girl” as much as you may squirm, deny, deviate, argument fallacy ad nauseam, I will NOT and I will NEVER deviate from the original FACT: “Bobby DID NOT say that in 1966-1967, because he would have been EXCOMMUNICATED from the Worldwide Church of God,” YOU CHERRYPICKED a dubious quote (ignoring all the other documentation to the contrary) which you now RELUCTANTLY admit was supposedly printed in *1960* putting your target at a mere 14-17 years of age… but defrauded your readers, by placing it in a 1966-1967 time line you constructed.
Bobby was in my church at that time. I KNOW the doctrines of Armstrong cult, having been in that church for 18 years. Your irresponsible journalism is pathetic!

Anyone can visit the Internet Archive Wayback Machine which caught a cache of “Bat Girl”'s obsessive yellow journalism stunt which seeks to destroy and denegrate Bobby Fischer for views he did not have — and verify for themselves, "Bat Girl" did NOT provide either the date (1960 or earlier, putting him at yet aged 14-17) nor the source for its out of date cherrypicked dubious “quote”. And as we see on this page, there is a lot of information which “Bat Girl” chose to “selectively omit.”

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.

Here is another topic the “batgirl” clown continues to raise, using false “evidence”. It made the outlandish claim regarding ancestors of Paul Morphy, that the lady could not have been a slave ever, because:

“…Sadly, it is a known, true fact of history that slaves in America were not allowed to own property <--- in the days before the Civil War…”

Not so! Slaves … FORMER Slaves indeed owned property, made FREE MEN.

White Men often married women of color, and sometimes, especially in Creole country, Louisiana, recognized their children. The level of social prosperity in status and property holdings varied from state to state. So I have pointed out the "States' Rights" which are pertinent to this topic and to debunk the “batgirl” and its fraud which serves no other purpose than raining on the pride of minorities, to claim Paul Morphy as one of their own and besides, “batgirl” could not possibly prove beyond reasonable doubt, that Paul Morphy, the first world chess champion… could not, did not… have mixed ancestry (as most Creole people … Paul Morphy was in fact Creole) living in New Orleans, Louisiana short of grave-robbery and DNA analyses.

A small tribute to the racist and its desperate mission to rain on the pride of minorities claiming the first world's...

…precisely what I'm trying to do…

“…The above article about Fischer on pages 97, 98 and 100 of Life, 21 February 1964 was referred to in C.N. 5200. It contains a number of colourful observations ascribed to the young master, but is it known that they are ‘safe’? We refrained from quoting from such an article, bearing in mind Fischer's remark, ‘A lot of these quotes about me are not correct’
Indeed, the largest single category of loose ends regarding Bobby Fischer arguably relates to remarks attributed to him without any precise, reliable source. A major contribution to the cause of chess truth, and to Fischer’s memory, would be a webpage featuring only those quotes which are known to be correct and for which exact citations are supplied.

Such statements were the opinions of Jack S. Battell, not Bobby Fischer who had already adamantly denied those statements attributed to him, or clarified they were taken out of context.

“In analyzing women as chess players some speak politely, and others are blunt. Young Bobby Fischer in a recent article in Harper's was quoted as saying: ‘They're weak, all women. They shouldn't play chess. . .They're like beginners.’”

“Fischer's remarks were brutal, his view exaggerated (Later he said he had been quoted ‘out of context’ and the general impression conveyed was ‘inaccurate.’) (Then Jack S. Battel proceeds to convey his own #FakeNewsOpinions and misguided misogyny while unapologetically dragging Bobby Fischer's reputation thru the mud with him.) … But essentially, women are weak as chess players. Miss Vera Menchik—later Mrs. Stevenson, who died during the blitz bombing of London—was one of the few women able to win from male masters. There were a good 30 in the ‘Vera Menchik club,’ as her victims were designated. But hers were individual victories scattered through many tournaments. And there has not been another woman player equal to her.”

Any buffoons among the chess circles who can only muster an interview from 1964 where Bobby expressed MAINSTREAM religious belief in God-ordained Gender Roles… whoopy doo, RELIGION… not misogyny… have proven their criticism is based on sheer, unadulterated lack of basic knowledge about the social & political climate of 1960s and 1970s United States… a reflection on those critics' profound ignorance, not Bobby's.

Historical Context: “…generally are not regarded…” tells the reader, that in 1964, the overwhelming consensus of men in their 30's, 40's, 50's, etc., (and even women) did not regard women's chess play with much respect. But this fact is generally ommitted from modern accounts of chess history.
Modern writers have often cherrypicked the young Fischer, age 20, to scapegoat as the sole source of “misogyny” in 1964 by mis-characterizing his religious beliefs, as “misogynist” which includes the ample fake quotes, often attributed to Bobby Fischer, quotes, which he adamantly denied making, or clarified were “taken out of context” time and time again.

You Can Almost Hear a Pawn Drop
“Women generally are not regarded very highly as chess players. Mrs. Jane Coyne, Webster Groves housewife, who became interested because of her children's enthusiasm for chess, tells of being defeated one night by a teen-age boy. When she apologized for her poor game, he said consolingly: “Don't mind it, Mrs. Coyne. Women aren't suited for chess. They just don't have logical minds.”

When it came to allowing women to compete, Bobby Fischer said, “I'd welcome some girls in chess.” (1972) He competed against women during exhibitions the same as he would any other. When he joined our church by the early 1960s, Bobby was taught and began to express the common belief women were created “differently” and not cut out for chess. Before that, he was notorious for expression of pro-Feminist views. i.e. giving his Mom full credit for the team's participation at the chess olympics. He even studied women's chess games.

The one thing Bobby was not known to do was sit around mulling about the “scheming” and “evil” nature of women… or actively seeking ways to prohibit women's participation in chess. Remember Baraka Shabazz, and how she dropped out of chess — likely she ran into not only racists, but misogynists too. They didn't like being beaten by a girl… a young woman. Such unbearable humiliation to the ego!

This is the uncensored sentiments of Clif Sherwood, who tracked down a woman in 1933, and murdered her, because she refused to marry him. That's what he told her, if she refused to marry him — he'd kill her.

The “ist” in people becomes apparent when they actively seek to HARM people. Who did Bobby Fischer harm?

Move Pondered
Susan Solomon, 15, considers her next move after being dropped from Chicago's Von Steuben High School chess team because rules forbid women in interscholastic competition. Susan is taking her case to court. (AP wirephoto).

Girl Loses Spot On Chess Team Files Court Suit
Chicago (AP) - A Chicago teenager said today she will file suit in an attempt to get reinstated to her high school chess team after being dropped from competition because she is a girl.
Susan Solomon, a 15-year-old junior at Von Steuben High School, said the Chicago Board of Education ordered her dropped from the team after two matches. She had been victorious in one and lost the other.
A spokesman for the board said under rules governing interscholastic athletics women are not eligible. Both matches in which she participated were declared forfeits.
“Participating in a chess game may seem like a small thing,” Susan said, “but this ruling that excludes women (from interscholastic competition) is typical of many written and unwritten rules that thrust an inferior status on women.”
The American Civil Liberties Union said it will take Susan's case, but wants to expand the suit to challenge the right of women to compete in all interscholastic sports.
Susan agrees but added:
“That probably would lessen my own personal chances to get reinstated to the chess team because it would be more difficult to open all sports to the girls, rather than just chess and checkers.”

Susan Solomon, 15, former Von Steuben High School chess player who is trying to check mate the Board of Education, is not the first girl to play on a Chicago high school chess team.
Virginia Waller [formerly Virginia Sheffield] was president of the Hyde Park High School Chess Club in 1929, a team that won all its matches and took the city championship. In 1933 she was the Chicago World's Fair woman chess champion.
Miss Solomon, 6226 N. Harding St., was eased off the school's chess team after the Chicago Public High School Athletic Association rules girls cannot compete with boys in interscholastic competition.
Miss Solomon says she and the American Civil Liberties Union plan to take the case to court.
"I think the Board of Education already has set a precedent in my case," said Mrs. Waller, who loves at 2562 Fontana Dr., Glenview. "I think she has enough ammunition."
Mrs. Waller played against World Chess Champion Dr. Alexander Alekhine, when he played 32 simultaneous games blindfolded at the 1933 World's fair.
Mrs. Waller and another student once demonstrated their ability by playing blindfold chess in Marshall Field's game section.
"In all the games I played, I never met another girl in competition," said Mrs. Waller, who said she may be the first female to play high school chess in Chicago.
"And I never met with any of the discrimination that Miss Solomon has run into," she said.

When I ran across this story in the 1971 newspapers, I never expected the young Susan Solomon to have went on to lead such an impressive life. (I remember the panic in the 1970s about the Ozone layer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oJzfmWO3CU). Her life contains a long list of academic, scientific awards and achievements https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Solomon.

Response 10 hours ago:
Hi Sharon,
Yes that was me one when I was young. Thanks for asking. My memory of it is that the ACLU did take the case to court. I was never asked to testify or appear. I think the outcome was that it went to the Illinois Supreme Court, for non contact sports only. The Ill Supreme Court decided to Change the rules for chess and checkers only. They thought about tennis but decided that would be too risquee because the girls legs would show in tennis shorts!
How times have changed, for the better!
Best
Susan

Greetings Ms. Solomon,
Thanks for the follow up on the story. It is ridiculous how much interference fundamentalists posed to public life back then. Here's another item I had found on the topic. News about your chess battle fell off in the papers and I was surprised that Wikipedia and other sources didn't elaborate on your earliest chess battles and successes.

I have gladly shared the impressive stories about all you made with your life, with friends of chess. . . there's some serious lessons to be learned there and worth remembering.

Very best regards to you and yours,
Sharon

Another thing I will add is that the boys on the team (and at that point, being quite young, it’s fair to call them boys) were incredibly supportive of me. They all said, she made the team, let’s have her play! I will never forget that there are supportive colleagues in this world.

Young Players Making Move
by Shirley Gallina
Copley News Service
Chess may never replace baseball as one of America's favorite sports, but probably more people in all countries will follow the world champion games this spring than the World Series.
And, for the first time in a generation, an American will be in a world championship game.
Prime mover behind the tremendous upsurge of interest in chess is Bobby Fischer, the 28-year-old Brooklyn prodigy, who has qualified to meet the world champion, Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. Fischer has done for chess what the American-Chinese table tennis match did for Ping-Pong.
Since 1948, there has never been a world champion who hasn't been a Soviet citizen. Spassky, 34, has been champion since 1969.
If Fischer beats Spassky, he will become the first American to hold the title in more than 100 years, and that's heady stuff for lesser American chess players. Not only that, many expect Fischer will capture the title.
“It looks like Fischer will win,” says chess expert Stan Perry.
Perry explains that chess players are rated along a scale reaching from 500 to 2,800 and Fischer's rating is 2,750.
Fischer also is the idol of another player, Gary Kovalsky, a chess tournament player at the age of 8. He recently took a second-place prize in the Los Angeles County Scholastic Open Chess Championship.
Young and old alike are drawn to chess and have been for centuries.
Chess has been traced back to India, in about the 6th Century. The game later spread to the Middle East and Europe. It remained essentially that same game with little change until about 1520, when the queen's move was changed.
Until then, the game moved at a slower pace due to lack of pieces' mobility. With the appearance of the queen that could move in all directions, the game acquired a more dynamic nature.
Chess, which some say was the invention of an Indian philosopher, originally symoblized the battle between two Indian armies, and it was called “chaturanga,” which means army game.
It remains a military-oriented game today, although through the centuries the rules and the names as well as the shapes of the pieces have changed.
Originally, chariots were used in place of castles, and in some countries, were boats. The “bishops” were elephants, and king was in the center, and next to him in the beginning, not his queen … the piece which became the most powerful on the board.
Chess originally was played by kings, queens and the wealthy class, and a court chess player was a fixture in every palace. The game didn't begin to filter down to the common man until the 1700s, in England and France, where it was played in pubs and coffee shops.
Today, there are 26,000 registered tournament players in the United States, a figure which has tripled in the last five years. There are 4 million players in Russia, and Russians have dominated chess ever since the [Bolshevik] revolution.
Being preeminent has been a great morale factor, and the Russian government has put special emphasis on chess. It got the children started at an early age, according to J. Michael Kanyon, an avid player.
“Once one gets into chess, he never can truly master it because it is an endless well of variations,” Kenyon explains. The game is played with 16 pieces on a board with 64 squares.
If only the first 10 moves of each player were written, it would require three, 200-page books just to write the number of possible variation of moves each player could make, according to Kenyon.
“It's a complex game. Many try it, but not many will stick with it as it's very frustrating and requires endless hours of study,” says Perry, a semiretired chemical engineer who teaches bridge and also tennis, which he admits is his “real game”.
“One peculiarity of chess is that it lends itself to prodigies,” Perry says. “Some have a real flavor for it, learn quickly and become good. Fischer was good at 8.
But few women play chess.
“Women are different from men, and they don't take to a game that has the long-term, painstaking effort and concentration that chess requires,” says Perry, who rates himself as a “medium player.”
“However, women take well to bridge,” he added. “It is more social, and four people are involved. Also, there is a greater element of luck in bridge.
“With chess, the nervous tension is tremendous,” Perry says. “It wears you out. Women are not the type to sit across from each other and think. They are too exuberant and emotional.
“But, there are some excellent women players,” he adds consolingly.
Kenyon says women are not banned from tournaments, but they don't win. There have been only two women in history who have competed with men on their own level, and both were Europeans, one an Austrian who played in the 1930s.
“It comes down to physical strength and stamina,” Kenyon says. “It's a contest of endurance, and women simply don't have this strength.”

Editor, The Record:
Miss Abbe Seldin, Teaneck's tennis star, is to be congratulated for challenging the establishment with respect to her right to play on the Teaneck High School varsity tennis team.
Public schools of my community have been among leaders in promulgating expanded athletic programs for the girls.
Having enough other special problems, however, this board was not about to even consider leading a fight to break the gender barrier in sports.
Although no one questions the right of girls to participate in the bands, dramatic societies, glee clubs, debating societies, science fairs, and the like, an unfair distinction has been drawn with respect to such sports as golf, tennis, handball, swimming, and even baseball.
If the girl is good enough, she's good enough. Unlike the Navy, all our schools have separate toilet and dressing facilities for the girls, so there is no question of physical privacy.
The statement attributed to Mr. Fattings, principal of Union Hill High School in today's New York Times, saying inclusion of the girls would require female advisers, speaks for itself. if this is the best argument available against Miss Seldin's position, she's a shoo-in!

To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”.
